Bulletproof Matcha Latte Recipe | Creamy & Delicious!

Skip the coffee with this easy bulletproof matcha latte recipe. Enjoy a mug of sweet and creamy green tea. Get your caffeine fix plus a good-for-you treat!

I used to think that I could never live without coffee. Especially before we stopped buying coffee creamer.

Kids, a spouse, a home, a business, and a list of to-dos a mile long were good enough reasons to keep the coffee flowing all day long!

But many years into my coffee love affair, I heard about a healthy green tea called matcha that still had caffeine but eliminated the crash that usually happened mid-morning. PLUS, I heard that it was actually healthy to drink!

Then, I heard about a new way to drink coffee (called bulletproof coffee) and I started wondering…could I skip the coffee and make a bulletproof matcha latte instead?!

Well, there was only one way to find out, right?

Bust out your frother, because you’re going to want to try this bulletproof matcha latte too!

WHAT IS A BULLETPROOF MATCHA CAFE LATTE?

“Bulletproof matcha cafe latte” is a mouthful, and there’s a lot going on here that I want you to know about, so let’s back up for just a minute.

“Bulletproof” started out as coffee with the idea of adding healthy fats to feed your brain. The original bulletproof coffee recipe included brewed coffee, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter, blended together for a creamy morning pick-me-up. Essentially, you’re taking the awesome benefits of coconut oil AND butter and empowering your body and brain first thing in the morning, to take on the day.

Matcha green tea is high in an antioxidant called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) which is believed to have cancer-fighting effects on the body. Studies have linked green tea to a variety of health benefits, like helping to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, and even encouraging weight loss!

WHY MAKE MATCHA GREEN TEA LATTE RECIPE

So why make this matcha green tea latte recipe?

  • Get those healthy fats! I’m a big fan of butter and coconut oil and making this matcha latte bulletproof is an easy way to get both in my diet.
  • Enjoy the benefits of green tea. By combining the idea of bulletproof drinks with powdered green tea, you get the perks of both.
  • Have a fancy coffeehouse drink at home. Up until trying this method, I hadn’t really had a matcha latte aside from the occasional coffee shop treat. Now I can make one every morning!
  • It’s a lot cheaper! I definitely wouldn’t head to the coffee shop every day, but making this homemade matcha latte recipe at home is way more affordable.
  • And it tastes amazing! Frothing the healthy fats with the matcha and the almond milk makes for a luscious, creamy warm beverage that’s just lightly sweetened and perfect for a morning sip.

MATCHA LATTE RECIPE INGREDIENTS

I like food that does my body good AND tastes good, so here’s what I use to make my bulletproof matcha latte recipe:

  • Hot water. This helps dissolve the matcha powder.
  • Matcha green tea powder. I like this high-quality matcha brand.
  • Perfect Supplements grass-fed collagen. This is my go-to brand for collagen!
  • Grass-fed butter. Use the highest-quality butter you can afford.
  • MCT oil or coconut oil. MCT oil contains medium-chain triglycerides, which are derived from coconut oil. Not all coconut oil is considered MCT oil and MCT oil can be expensive. I recommend giving this a try with the coconut oil you likely already have on hand before buying MCT oil.
  • Stevia. I like this brand plain or this brand vanilla. Coffee shop matcha lattes are sometimes heavy on the sweetener, so I like being able to customize mine. You can also use a bit of maple syrup or honey instead.
  • Almond milk. Use almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, or any desired plant-based milk for your matcha cafe latte.

I’ve tried other brands of collagen, but the Perfect Supplements brand is the only one where I could actually see the difference on the outside. Literally, my nails grew longer, my skin GLOWED and my hair was growing like crazy!! I stock up when it’s on sale – sign up for my newsletter and I’ll let you know when that is!

HOW TO MAKE A MATCHA LATTE

Here’s how to make a matcha latte. This is the more basic matcha latte, which is a yummy fancy coffeehouse treat at home! Keep reading for how to make a matcha latte bulletproof too.

Step 1. Start the boiling water.

Step 2. Meanwhile, add collagen, matcha green tea powder, and stevia to a large mug. (I like to use my big Arctic travel mug).

Measuring spoon of green tea powder.

Step 3. When the water is boiling, add it to the mug and let the tea sit for about one minute.

Step 4. Using a milk frother (or a blender), combine the ingredients together well.

If you use a milk frother to blend your matcha latte, make sure you’re using a large enough mug so that the latte doesn’t overflow onto the counter – it rises a bit while frothing! I use 16 oz of liquid in a 20 oz mug.

Step 5. Add the almond milk and blend again. Enjoy warm!

RECIPE MATCHA GREEN TEA LATTE TIPS

This recipe matcha green tea latte sounds like there are a lot of moving pieces, but I assure you it’s quick and easy once you do it for the first time. Plus, it’s VERY customizable to how YOU like your latte.

  • Water: Use as little as 8 ounces of water, or up to 16 ounces (I use 16 ounces in my Arctic tumbler.)
  • Matcha green tea powder: Use as little as ½ teaspoon fine powder per 8 ounces of water or as much as 1 teaspoon.
  • Collagen: If you don’t want to add this, feel free to skip it!
  • Butter and MCT oil: Use as little as 1 teaspoon of each or up to 1 Tablespoon. If you’ve never made a bulletproof beverage before, I recommend starting with the lower amounts and working your way up. Adding a larger amount of fat to begin with can cause some digestive discomfort.
  • Stevia: You can omit this entirely if you prefer, but I like my lattes to have a bit of sweetness to them.
  • Almond milk: If you want more quality fat, consider using canned coconut milk!

Also, I like to use a milk frother to froth the tea and collagen together really well because it doesn’t wake the kids up in the morning, and because it travels well!

If you don’t have a milk frother, you could easily use a blender.

I do recommend using some sort of mixing device, other than a spoon, to avoid getting clumps of tea at the bottom of the mug. A bamboo whisk is popular for the match tea traditionalists!

WHAT TO SERVE WITH MATCHA GREEN TEA LATTE RECIPE

Here are a few recipes I enjoy eating with my matcha green tea latte:

BULLETPROOF MATCHA LATTE FAQS

What does matcha taste like?

Matcha has a deep, earthy flavor that is just slightly bitter, with bright, grassy undertones. If you enjoy drinking green tea in general, you will probably like matcha. The flavor will vary a bit depending on the brand and grade of matcha powder that you get. Ceremonial-grade matcha is the highest quality (but is also more expensive), while culinary matcha might be slightly more bitter, but mixes well in drinks like this matcha latte or in baked goods.

Can you make an iced matcha latte?

Sure! I tend to drink my matcha hot, but you can follow the steps in this recipe to mix the matcha powder, water, collagen, and stevia. Let that mixture cool, then add almond milk (or your milk of choice) and pour over ice. The bulletproof version probably wouldn’t work though, since mixing the fats with the cold ice might mean ending up with chunks of fat in your drink. Stick with the basic matcha latte for the iced version!

Can you drink matcha green tea on keto?

Yes! Using almond milk (to keep the carbs low), this bulletproof matcha latte is perfect for a keto diet!

Does it matter what brand of matcha green tea powder you buy?

Yes and no. Obviously, you want to buy the best you can afford, BUT if you’re just starting out, buy the cheap stuff. See if you like the flavor and if so, dig in and find a brand you love and can afford. If you don’t like the way matcha green tea powder tastes, then you won’t be out much.
