Have you been down the baking aisle at the grocery store lately?
I’m always amazed at how many different types of chocolate chips, baking chips, and candy melts there are. You’ve got your standard milk chocolate chips and white chocolate chips, and then you have Heath bar bits, Reese’s peanut butter chips, and even unicorn rainbow chips.
It’s enough to make my head spin.
I love chocolate chips and one of the best easy treats to make with them?
Chocolate covered pretzels.
You might see these pop up more around the holidays, and they DO make a terrific holiday treat, but these easy chocolate covered pretzels are a yummy treat you can make year-round.
EASY HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS
I tend to make homemade chocolate covered pretzels for parties or bigger group events. When I make party food for gatherings it needs to fit these requirements:
- Frugal or inexpensive
- Healthy (or at least tweaked to be better for you than before)
- Easy to make ahead
- Super delicious
Chocolate-covered pretzels fit these categories and you can make all sorts of fun varieties! They make a fun dessert or snack for any occasion!
CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS RECIPE INGREDIENTS
For this chocolate covered pretzels recipe, you can have as much variety as you want, or stick with one flavor.
- Pretzel rods. You can also use gluten-free pretzels for yummy gluten free chocolate coated pretzels.
- Chocolate for pretzels. I used white chocolate, milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, and dark chocolate. You can use chocolate chips or chop up chocolate bars.
- Toppings (sprinkles, sea salt, chopped nuts, flaked coconut, chopped candies like candy canes, etc.)
You’ll also need:
This chocolate covered pretzels recipe definitely falls into the treats category, but we can still use pretzels with a simple ingredients list, and higher-quality chocolate and toppings. In an 80/20 lifestyle, this is part of the 20%.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS
- Plan your chocolate/topping combo first. Line up your chips (or chopped chocolate) and toppings together. I promise that once you get going, you’ll forget what flavors you actually decided to pair up.
- You need two mugs for each combo. Mugs work better than microwave-safe bowls or a double boiler. If you’re doing 3 variations, you’ll need 6 mugs.
- Prep your toppings before you melt the chocolate. You want to dip your pretzels while the chocolate pretzel dip is still wet and hot. Once that chocolate melts, you need to move quickly because it will thicken as it cools.
- Sprinkle the toppings, don’t dip the pretzels. After you are finished dipping pretzels in chocolate, you’ll sprinkle the toppings on top. Rolling in the toppings just causes a mess and can mix globs of chocolate with the toppings rather than giving you clean finished chocolate pretzels.
- Prepare your baking sheet. Your dipped pretzels will be much easier to remove from your cookie sheet if it is lined with parchment or waxed paper.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS
Ready to learn how to make chocolate covered pretzels?
Step 1. Line each of your cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
Step 2. Prepare your toppings and set aside.
Step 3. In a mug, measure chocolate and microwave on high for 30 seconds. Stir very well with a spoon until the chocolate is smooth. If the chocolate isn’t smooth, continue to microwave for 5-second intervals, stirring very well after each time. Note that sometimes small pieces of chocolate will melt as you stir it into the melted chocolate surrounding it.
Step 4. Tilt the mug to create a deeper pool of chocolate and dip one end of the pretzel rod into the mug. Turn the rod continuously as you pull the rod out of the mug. Set it on the lined baking sheet.
Step 5. Repeat this dipping process for 5 more pretzel rods.
Step 6. Top the pretzel rods with desired toppings. (I recommend topping the pretzels after they’ve cooled just slightly, but if you wait too long, the toppings won’t stick. I found that making 6 pretzels at a time and then topping them was the perfect amount of cooling time.)
Step 7. Repeat this process with your remaining pretzels.
Step 8. Cool at room temperature overnight OR in the fridge. Cooling in the fridge is recommended if you need the pretzels to be ready quickly.
HOW TO STORE MILK CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS
Chocolate pretzels should be stored in an airtight container. They last for 2-3 weeks.
Although I haven’t tried this, you could freeze them. I would lay them on a sheet pan to freeze initially and then move them to a freezer-safe container.
YUMMY CHOCOLATE PRETZELS COMBINATIONS
There are so many ways you can flavor your chocolate pretzels. Here are some of my favorite combinations:
- Dark chocolate with sea salt. These turned out really good, and they’re so fancy looking…but they’re definitely salty. Pretzel rods already have salt on them so go easy on the salt sprinkles!
- White chocolate covered pretzels with sprinkles. These were my favorites because any type of sprinkles looks festive against the white background, and you can mix and match colors to match any theme.
- Milk chocolate covered pretzels with chopped peanuts. I used an almost empty bag of peanuts from my pantry, but any type of chopped nut will work.
- Semi-sweet chocolate with crushed peppermint candies. You can choose to pulse the mints as fine as you’d like or leave them a bit chunky!
- If you’re feeling really fancy, drizzle thin lines of white chocolate on the dark chocolate covered pretzels!
CHOCOLATE COATED PRETZELS FOR ALL OCCASIONS

- Christmas
- Valentine’s Day (think heart and pink sprinkles)
